How to Help Your Child with Math

    Last updated 3 months ago

Your child may be too young to bring home difficult math homework questions, but he or she will start those math assignments eventually. You can help your child prepare for tough math studies by cultivating a familiarity with math at an early age. These tips will help your children build the basic math skills that will allow them to excel in their studies.

    Teach Good Homework Practices

Your child may be completing his homework, but is it really helping him? Make sure your child understands how to approach math homework and isn’t just using the answers in the back of the book to hand in a complete sheet. You may want to encourage him to practice sample problems, and discuss concepts with him to verify that he understands the problems.

    Have a Positive Math Outlook

Telling your child how much you disliked math class or saying that math has little use in real life will not turn your child into a successful math student. Instead, reinforce the idea that math is important and that basic math skills are important to adult life. Talk about how math plays a role in your job and the jobs of other adults your child knows. Making math a positive, important focus will help your child establish a good math mindset.

Use Well-rounded Approaches to a Problem

Help your child approach the problem in creative ways. He could use blocks as a tactile approach to addition or subtraction, for example. Some children may benefit from verbalizing math problems. Helping your child discuss the steps and theory of a problem may the key to understanding the larger concepts. And remember, getting the wrong answer is a learning experience. Help your child figure out what went wrong and how he or she can fix it.

Starwood Montessori School can help your child achieve math proficiency in creative, exciting ways. Our Montessori approach to teaching engages students in the classroom in the Frisco and Carrollton areas. Call us today at (972) 712-8080 to find out more.

Chances are your child has many books, videos, and brain-stimulating toys in his room, but going outside to play can also help your child appreciate nature and the importance of eco-friendly living. By nurturing love of nature, you can help your child develop a lifelong habit of keeping the planet and the environment healthy.

Make sure to encourage your child to play outside. As he develops a bond with the outdoors, he will be more likely to appreciate the importance of preserving it. For great advice on helping your child bond with nature, watch this short video.

The Answers to Your Montessori FAQs

    Last updated 4 months ago

Is your child ready to start preschool or looking for an educational change? Have you considered enrolling them in a Montessori school? Montessori schools work differently than most other educational settings. Keep reading to learn more about Montessori practices and get answers to questions that will help you decide whether this unique learning environment is right for your child.

Can All Children Be Montessori Students?

Montessori is designed so that all children can succeed. While teachers do help children move through a curriculum of skills, children are encouraged to master those skills at their own pace. Because of this freedom, Montessori schools can accommodate children who are gifted, those with special needs, and those who work at a normal pace. Gifted children have the ability to move through material rapidly and bring in additional research and challenges that allow them to explore material more deeply, while special needs children can adjust tasks to suit their needs and master skills at their own pace.

Why Are Montessori Classes Large and Comprised of Varying Ages?

Rather than placing all focus on the teacher, Montessori students are encouraged to learn from one another. Children are usually put in classes with 25 to 30 other students, and regularly work together. Classes usually represent a three year age span. The oldest children mentor the younger children, solidifying their skills as they teach their younger classmates.

How Will My Child Perform In a Traditional Educational Environment?

Montessori students perform at equal or better levels on national standardized tests when compared with their peers in more traditional school environments. Students are generally successful when they transition to other environments from a Montessori school, and continue to perform exceptionally well in their studies.

If the Montessori environment sounds like the right fit for you and your children, contact Starwood Montessori. We serve children in the Frisco and Carrollton areas. Call us today at (972) 712-8080 to learn more about the ways we can help your child excel.

Teach Your Children Counting with This Great iPhone App

    Last updated 4 months ago

Montessori education is a learning model that has been highly praised for its hands-on teaching methods for children. This approach has become so successful that several iPhone and iPad Apps, such as Grasshopper Apps’ Montessori Counting Board, have been developed to let parents and teachers teach kids in this way, inside and outside the classroom.

With the Montessori Counting Board app, children learn the basics of counting through sound, sight, and touch. Five fun amd clever game options have been developed to help children use these senses by both clicking and dragging number tiles in sequence. This also provides children with a great introduction to using technology such as smartphones and tablets.

Use this app with your toddler to prepare them for a future as a student of Montessori education. At Starwood Montessori School, we use a variety of hands-on activities and lessons to teach kids essential life skills in the time-honored Montessori method.
