Tips for Incorporating Math into Your Child's Daily Life

    Last updated 3 months ago

Math skills are critical for a child’s success in education and later in life, but math doesn’t have to be a subject that inspires anxiety or intimidates your child. By filling your family’s life with math, your child will become comfortable with math concepts. Use these simple and fun tips to develop your child’s math skills at home.

    Math on a road trip

While on long car ride, or just on the way to school, you can use the time in the car to brush up on your child’s math skills. Play games by spotting numbers on license plates and adding them up to see who can find the largest one or by pointing out road signs that have numbers in them. You can also have your kids calculate the cost of a tank of gas or the time it will take to reach your destination at the speed you’ll be traveling.

    Cooking with math

Making meals together is a great way to teach kids valuable life skills such as cooking and baking. These activities also involve math, and you can use this time to brush up on your child’s knowledge of fractions. If your child isn’t yet familiar with fractions, use recipes and measuring cups to introduce him or her with the concept using food.

    Telling time

If your kids have a clock in their room or a watch, they are already using math in their everyday lives. Telling time involves number concepts, and you can build on this knowledge. For example, you can ask your kids to calculate how many hours are left until their next birthday or the start of the school day.
