National Geographic: The Best Summer Trips for 2012
All parents imagine wondrous futures for their children, and those marvelous dreams have their roots in concrete accomplishments. The more your child gets out of his or her educational experience, the better equipped he or she will be to succeed in life. Most children who do well in school have:
All children are naturally curious about the world around them. All too often, adults grow impatient with the questions children ask, but those questions are part of the learning process. Children have not learned to take anything for granted, and they view the world around them with ceaseless inquisitiveness. Curiosity is the engine that drives all education, from infancy to adulthood.
Success in school doesn’t begin and end in the classroom. Children whose parents take an active interest in their educations, communicate with teachers, and complement school activities with at-home learning opportunities are much more likely to do well in the classroom. Positive reinforcement—the feeling that one’s accomplishments will be recognized and rewarded—is indispensable.
A sense of order is the necessary framework for a child’s development. A strong sense of structure and regularity in their daily lives—eating meals, doing chores, playing outside, doing homework—helps build the sense of personal responsibility that is essential to succeeding in school.
Children can accomplish marvelous things when they are given the opportunity. In an environment that is carefully structured to bring out their innately creative and curious nature, children can develop more rapidly than even their parents and teachers may believe possible. This is why the Montessori Method has proven so fruitful over decades of application.

We have two 6th graders who graduated yesterday!
Their names are Cheyenne Walker and Medha Vallurupalli. Cheyenne started attending Starwood in January, 2005 and Medha in March, 2003. They have both written a letter about their experiences in the school:
Dear Ms. Anita,
My days at Starwood have been my best days by far. The kids are so fun and charismatic and such a joy to be around. The teachers are caring, and the front office knows how to help you get back up on your feet when you fall (literally and figuratively). All of them have taught me things I would have been clueless about otherwise. At the age of four, I started taking piano lessons at the school, and I cannot stress how much that has helped me with my potential career. Over my years at Starwood, I have improved academically and socially and have gained much more confidence. I have improved tremendously in mathematics and in language, as well as your usual science and social studies.
Thanks to Starwood I have overcome any academic barriers and I am ready to move on--kind of. Leaving Starwood will be an extremely difficult feat and I sincerely wish that there wasn’t just twelve days left until I have to leave. Thank you for making this school such a good experience for me and others. Out of all the schools I’m going to attend, I know this one will be the most memorable.
Love,
Cheyenne Walker
Dear Ms. Anita,
My years at Starwood have been a wonderful experience. I have had many great memories and wonderful opportunities to improve both my academic and social life. The teachers have been very supportive and helpful. They taught me many valuable life lessons, as well as academics. Starwood has been a part of my life for 10 years and, to be honest, I will miss it very much.
The curriculum at Starwood is much more advanced than the other schools I have ever seen. Starwood also encourages kids in Upper Elementary to participate in the Student Council. It helps build courage and bravery. In the 2010, I was elected President, and it was an amazing experience to be a part of. Starwood is a great school. Their are a lot of lessons and learning experiences that I will always remember.
Love always,
Medha Vallurupalli
