Your child’s education should not be restricted to when they are at private school. Studies have shown that parents who incorporate and encourage their child’s learning at home will ultimately help their child perform better and achieve more. The following guidelines offer a few simple ways that you can continue your child’s education when the school day is over.
Ask your child about school The easiest way to further your child’s academic career is by asking them about it. Make it a habit to ask each night about what your child learned in school that day. Not only will your child enjoy the interest you’re taking in them, but your questions will also serve to reinforce their lessons. By requesting that your child retell what they studied, they will be more likely to retain that information.
Set aside a special homework area for your child Many children fail to perform as well as they could in school simply because they are too distracted at home to do their homework. A quick fix to that problem is to create a homework station for your child so that they can work on their studies without interference from siblings, television, or other diversions.
Help your child with his or her homework Go one step further and take an interest in your child’s schoolwork. This can prove highly effective in helping your child learn new concepts that they may not easily understand. Likewise, your enthusiasm can encourage your child to learn about subjects that they may not inherently enjoy.
Encourage your child to further research what they are learning in school If you child does take a keen interest in a particular subject, support their desire to learn more about it. Take a trip to the library and check out books about math, science, or whatever other topic they enjoy. See if you can find any educational online programs that will stimulate more interest. If possible, go to a local museum and let your child’s love for history or astronomy further develop. The possibilities are endless.
