A Beginner's Introduction to Montessori Education
A Montessori education is designed to teach your child the tools and love of learning from which they can benefit for the rest of their life. Read on to learn more about how attending a Montessori school is the best choice you can make for your child.
The Beginning
The Montessori approach was designed by Maria Montessori around the turn of the 20th century. Her observation that children were capable of teaching and learning on their own was the basis of the Montessori educational principle. Maria saw that children would educate themselves based on their environment, so she set out to create a rich, stimulating environment in which to promote self-learning and nurture the excitement of discovery. Maria’s methods included the revolutionary idea that children did not need adults to learn—they simply needed the right tools.
Montessori Today
Today, teachers train in the Montessori Method to become observers and nurturers in the school’s attractive and stimulating environment. The environment of each classroom reflects the objects and concepts that are most stimulating to the age group occupying it, and teachers are trained to notice which concepts children gravitate towards—and which they avoid. Your child will be given specialized individual attention and encouragement in a way they could never find in a traditional school, and has the option to learn in a group or one-on-one with the teacher as suits their needs best.
Montessori Advantages
The advantages of receiving a Montessori education are clear. Children learn reading, writing, and arithmetic skills much earlier than in traditional schools, but the Montessori method also teaches the importance of morals and values. The unique Montessori environment encourages children to develop creativity, imagination, and problem-solving at their own pace without the intense pressure of keeping up with a class. Children are free to be themselves, and through this freedom they discover a love for learning.
